· Road Trip Day 1

Bath, UK · 2nd Apr 2010 · Posted by Annie

We've been wanting to get out of London on the bike ever since we bought it back in November last year.  However, the weather really hasn't been on our side - nor did we expect it to be, what with it being winter and all.  With 4 days to play with, Easter promised to be our first bike trip away, woohoo!!

Our first stop was Bath - well, Corsham to be specific.  It took us a few hours to get there from London because as you would expect, every Londoner was doing the same as us and leaving London on the morning of Good Friday.  We got stuck in traffic on the M4 heading out West, which in itself isn't a huge problem but when it starts to pour, it's not really that much fun.  Not to worry tough, we have decent wet weather gear and the panniers have waterproof covers over them so we didn't really get very wet.

We decided to take some back roads rather than stick to the boring motorways, so that we'd get to see some of the nice English countryside that everyone talks about.  With the weather clearing up, it was a really nice ride.

We stopped off at Avebury to look at Avebury Henge - which is meant to be just as if not more impressive than Stonehenge.  Dunno as we haven't been to Stonehenge yet!  The stone formations were pretty cool - the whole town is built inside and around this massive stone circle.  What was also pretty neat was the old church in the town - it's been around for over 1000 years!

Our visit to Bath was quite brief - by the time we got there it was starting to get a bit dark and still raining heaps.  We walked around a bit, saw the outside of the old Roman baths and had dinner in the basement of an incredibly small and cosy restaurant.

We ended up staying the night at Rudloe Hall - an old 19th Century manor.  Our room had a bath tub IN it!  And a fireplace!  How cool is that?

The trumpet all loaded up in short trip format.

  • Hey Annie, sounds awesome. How's the bike handle being loaded up? I'd like something like it for my next bike (ie. sport tourer) so would be interested to hear how you guys find it after your trip. :-)

  • I see you're getting into the territory of your ancestors. Apparently our part of the family are known as the Cullompton Luxtons because they went and lived there for a couple of hundred years before drifting back to around Winkleigh. Have a "Devonshire Tea" somewhere down there. You'll think you are back in New Zealand. All the baking people do (at least in my family) seems to have been handed down from the old folk in Devon. Freshly made scones with strawberry jam and whipped cream! MMmmmmm!
