· 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... slide!

Private parties in San Fran eh? Who would've known that the entry to the club called Slide would actually be a slide! We had to wait for the ok from the bouncer guy before blasting down a semi-spiral slide to get into the party. Crazy! Once in there it was a total orgy of people with MONEY. And LOTS of it. Seriously. Every person in there looked like they had stepped straight out of the pages of magazines full of hot people - cosmetic surgery everywhere (use your imagination!). One of the photos on this post was taken at the party so you can get an idea of what I'm talking about. The music was cranking and one dude looked like he was having an epileptic fit but was in fact having a good old boogie. Oh yeah. :)

Before the party though we had been cruising around San Fran checking out the local shops. Man, this place is INSANE for shopping! Tash, you were right. It would be sooooo easy to spend every cent of a holiday budget in this city. We've already bought 4 pairs of shoes, jackets, pyjama pants (hehe), scarves etc between us. We found The San Francisco Apple Store which is possibly one of the coolest shops I've ever seen. If you have an ipod or even if you don't, EVERYTHING you could ever want for them is available in there. We picked up some cool ipod cases, an FM radio thingy so you can listen to the radio on the iPod (very VERY cool) and a travel cable so you can plug your iPod into a TV and watch movies from them on hotel TVs. Very handy for a trip like that that's for sure. One of the photos shows how many iPod Nanos they're going through at the moment.

Sooo much to blog about so here's a quick summary of the other shops we saw. Old Navy, a MASSIVE 4-storey clothes shop, Steak Escape, a nice fast food place with a lot of mexican-origin foods. Lady Foot Locker, something we don't have in NZ but full of cool sports stuff for women. And most of these places were in a shopping mall called Westfield, an 8-storey mall with every shop imaginable. I can't describe it so there's a photo of it from the 3rd level. Insane!

Yesterday we went to Fisherman's Wharf and checked out Pier 39, a 'boutique' shopping centre on the wharves out past the SF city centre. We caught the tram out there - now that was cool! Clanking along on one of the world's most famous transportation systems is something you have to experience to understand. People hanging off the outside of the trams and when they reach the end of the line they end up on a turntable - the drivers then rotate the trams through 180 degrees ... by hand! Nothing mechanical or electronic here, it's all old-school. The brakes are foot-operated and everyone gives way to the trams. Awesome. :) Look through the photos attached to this post to see if you recognise anything to do with shrimps ... hehe. We didn't make it to Alcatraz this time around - you have to book about 4 months in advance or stand in queues for a few hours to get tickets. So we had to be content with taking a couple of snaps from long distance. It's awe-inspiring looking at the place that everyone has heard about it and that has featured in so many movies.

On the way back we walked up through Chinatown. Mind-blowing place that really. Ducks with the necks and heads still on hanging in the windows, cellphone shops and more asian fashion than you can shake a tram at. Food, people, traffic, and every language other than English are rampant in Chinatown obviously. All that makes for a pretty amazing show.

Today we hired a car and went to check out some cool stuff ... but I'll wait until next time to post about those. They're worth posting about by themselves!

Check out the photos! :)

  • Sounds as if you are having a great time! Don't spend all your money at once. Don't you think SF is like Wellington?
