· Mmmmm hamburgers

Hamburg, Germany · 8th Jan 2007 · Posted by Chris
Well here we are back in the land of bratwurst, the U-Bahn and washing machines with no english labels.

Eventually on trips like this there comes a time where you have to wash some clothes. Trust me, that´s sometimes harder than you think. Sure, washing machines still have doors and take washing powder but they sure as heck aren´t labelled in English. So anyway, off I had gone looking like a warped version of Santa with a large bag of clothes slung over my shoulder. I doubt the local Hamburg people would have been too impressed if I had started handing out gifts from that particular bag. :) To cut a long story short, I stood in front of a massive sign written in German for about 5 minutes trying to figure out how to not ruin our travelling clothes before an elderly gentleman came up to me and asked "Are you British?" Hahaha, thankfully he could speak passable English and he explained to me how to use the coin machine and how to get everything started. He must´ve thought I was completely stupid because he kept muttering something that sounded like "Ayee!". Hehe.

After eating dinner we headed back to our room and Annie listened to me rant about how freakin´ awesome this trip has been so far. Everything I´ve seen has been amazing and there´s still more to come! :)

The next day we went and checked out some of the sights in Hamburg and only managed to get hassled for money once on the way. Thankfully I think we could´ve both outrun the elderly homeless guy if he had gotten angry at us.

We walked around Hamburg for a while and checked out some of the sights, most of which seemed to be more large churches. We caught an elevator to the top of one of them and I showed my complete lack of German language skill by trying to slide open the elevator door that was clearly labelled "Drucken" ... "Push". Nice one Chris!

The Hamburg port section is pretty nice although it had started to rain pretty solidly by this time and so we wandered back towards the Hauptbahnhof. Thankfully it was Sunday and all the shops were closed or we´d be way over our 20kg max by now! So far we´ve only bought 8 pairs of shoes & boots between us. :)

Hamburg was a pretty well-deserved rest for us so bring on the next stop!

Auf wiedersehen! hehe
