· Umm, can we have some beef with our bread please?Paris, France · 31st Dec 2006 · Posted by Annie
Following our stop-over in Vichy, we ventured on up to Paris. Another train ride. Atleast we didn't have to stand up during this one!!
An hour before departing Vichy, I thought it might be a good idea to let Hankey and Phil know that we were actually coming up to Paris that same day, and were hoping to meet up with them. Oops, left that a bit late. Luckily though, they did get the email in time and after fumbling around with coins, cards and credit cards, we managed to make a phone call to Hankey's UK cellphone and arranged to meet them at their apartment.
So for all of you who know Hankey - he hasn't changed a bit :) Still the same ol' Hankey bob who eats bucket loads and speaks ultra loudly ;) Ay Mike? Lol :)
Anyway, it was great seeing Mike and Phil - and it was awesome being able to stay at this apartment in Paris. It gave us a bit of freedom with regards to coming and going and not having to lock all our stuff up each time we went out. Thanks Hankey and Phil (and Phil's flatmate whose apartment it actually is)!!!.
We had only planned on staying a couple of nights in Paris, but ended up spending 3 nights in total. Why not, ay? Mike, Phil, Chris and I spent the whole 2 and a half days wandering the streets of Paris, looking in shop windows, going in some shops, annnnnd, yes - eventually spending some money at these shops. We did a fair bit of shopping (the clothes were so niiiiice) and I managed to score not 1 but 2 pairs of boots. And a new winter coat. OHHH YEAH!!! Chris got a new jacket tho so it's even. Umm, yeah, or something.
Now, you can't go to Paris and not splurge on the food. Especially when you're travelling with Hankey. So we made sure to have giant meals fit for kings and queens every night we were there. On each of the 3 nights, our dinners consisted of 3 courses, not including the bucket loads of bread that was brought out each time. Each night, Hankey did a great job of asking for butter to go with our bread (in French mind you!), except for last night when the waiter thought he'd asked for "beef". He was very confused, as were we. We got our butter in the end tho :)
Chris and I went up the Eiffel Tower at night. We WALKED. That's right, WALKED. Walked up those millions of steps into the clouds. AND it was windy and raining. OMG. Super windy, so windy in fact that the top floor was closed. Oh well, at least the views were pretty magnificent and worth the walk (kinda).
Went to the Lourve one afternoon, saw the Mona Lisa. Been there done that.
Saw as many of the sights as possible, felt as if we caught as many metros as possible as well. Basically we followed Phil around who seemed to know Paris inside out and knew where all the cool hang-outs were. Thanks Phil for doing a great job at navigating us around Paris, I'm sure it was about as easy as herding cats :)
Umm, well I can't think of much else we did except for drink lots of red wine and talk lots. Basically it was just really nice catching up with Hankey and Phil and a bit of a break from the typical sight-seeing tours of big cities that you get when you go back-packing.
Now, on to Brugge!!
