· Welcome to our house...Århus, Denmark · 13th Jan 2007 · Posted by Annie
Our next stop was Århus, in the North East of Denmark. We caught another train (yet another train) from Hamburg, quite uneventful this time as opposed to our Amsterdam - Hamburg adventures. Except of course for the fact that although we got to the railway station in Hamburg with plenty of time to spare, by the time we had spent 42 minutes at the post office sending off 5kg worth of boots and jackets to Wellington, we only had 3 minutes to catch our train which left from the other end of the station. RUN!!! Shaaaame.
This was our first stop in Denmark and Chris was gazing out the train window the whole way going 'Awww, Denmark is really pretty'. Awwww... Something about ancestry, I dunno. Roots pulling at him or something. Or maybe it had something to do with the thousands of gorgeous blonde women we saw everywhere. Hmm, nah, must be the roots.
Denmark is really 'green'. It has a lot of fields, kinda like in the NZ countryside. But the grass seemed really really green. Like vivid green. We went over some really impressive bridges, they seem to like them over this side of the world.
Our hotel in Århus was pretty basic, it was more like a tiny cheap cabin at the bottom of a cruise ship. We kinda had to manouver around the eachother. Perhaps that has something to do with the crazy amount of stuff we have now accumulated. Damn shopping.
While in Århus (I love that name, hehe, Århus), we visited an old viking outdoor museum. The organizers have actually collected and moved old buildings from around Denmark so as to recreate a small village, in old style. They even have a working bakery and cafe, which of course we had to check out. Århus would have seemed a lot nicer had it not rained the whole time we were there, but we had to make the most of it and tried to ignore it. There seemed to be a hell of a lot of wind too, something we hadn't missed a bit since leaving Wellington. But alas, the dear wind has found us and is haunting us.
We also had another go on an ice skating rink with our normal walking shoes on. This rink had a lot of water on it which made it extra slippery. Some somewhat shady moments but no falls, thankfully.
Now, I must relate a slightly shame story regarding finding an Internet cafe (called BoomTown, lol) while in Århus. Having decided it was about time to blog some more, send some very important emails to mums & dads to let them know we're still alive, and of course, who are we kidding - just to have some contact with computers and the Internet(s), we found the only Internet Cafe mentioned in our Lonely Planet guide - "BoomTown" - on our map of the city. We set off in the dark (it gets dark around 4pm here), Chris confident in his knowledge of the where-abouts of this much desired location. We just turn left, left again, straight for a bit, and then left again, and then... don't worry Annie, I know where we're going. Ok, sweet. Left out of the hotel, left again. Walk down the big shopping street for 5 minutes, no problem. Oh, hang on, we've gone too far. Oops. Doh. We should've turned left waaaaaay back there. Like, right near where we turned left the second time. Doh. Ok, backtrack. Hmm, this looks about right - we'll take this left that leads into a dodgy little alley way... umm, this doesn't quite look right. Umm... ok, backtrack. So, if it's not this left, then where on earth is it? There is no left between our hotel and this one!! We'd just about decided that the map was all wrong when, oooOOOOOHHHhhhh, look. We're on a bridge, and the street we were looking for is actually UNDER us. Doh. Ok, down we go, left. All good. Sweeet! Found the place! But it looks shut! Damn! But the guide says it should be open til 2am! Umm... oh, look, there is a buzzer, ring it Chris. Ring it again Chris! Hmm, no response. Oh. Doh. Look at the map - the address is actually not on this street, it's actually one street over. We must be at the back entrance. What dumb-asses! Ringing the bell at the back entrance. Geeeeez. Ok, around the corner and yup, sure enough, there it is. BoomTown in all it's glory, as blingy as it gets, large neon signs everywhere. And oh look, there's the back of our hotel! Right across the street. In fact, there's our room WINDOW. We literally could've jumped out our room window and been at BoomTown's entrance.
As a result of this incredible navigational screw up, Chris and I have vowed never to enter an "Amazing Race" competition as clearly we would take the longest, most convoluted and indirect route to get anywhere before trying the most obvious. Meh.
Anyway, that was our Århus experience. We have 4 more days before our flight to Zurich so off to Malmö we go!!
