· Day tripping in the hills

Although I've never really owned a car, I really love going for long drives... as a passenger. So far, Chris and I haven't put much thought into buying our own car in Brisbane mostly because of the cost associated with having one: the cost of the car itself, maintenance, compulsory insurance, not to mention the soaring petrol prices. The last few weeks we've been really lucky in that our friends, Rheanna and Sanjay, have allowed us the use of their car while they've been away on holiday.

To make good use of this luxury, I asked around work and while getting my hair cut and colored (hairdressers are full of handy information you know!) and eventually decided that we should take a day drive up to Maleny, a cute small town up in the hills overlooking the Glass House Mountains, just north of Brisbane. The way it was described to me, Maleny sounded a lot like Martinborough or Greytown in New Zealand.

Rather than sitting on the motorway the whole way up to Maleny, we thought it would be neat to wind our way up through the back roads so we figured out a route using Google Maps and off we went.

Apart from a couple of compulsory wrong turns, seeing lots of kookaburras sitting up on electricity poles and spotting a dead kangaroo on the side of the road with it's legs sticking straight up in the air, the drive was quite uneventful but very pleasant. We passed a couple of very nice looking vineyards which I sure would make lovely day outings on their own. I guess it took us a good couple of hours to get to Maleny, getting us there just in time for a nice relaxed late lunch.

For those of you who know Greytown in NZ, Maleny is just like it except up in the hills. It's got lots of nice little shops and cafes lining the main road through town. The weather was sunny but cool and we got some pretty awesome views out over the Glass House Mountains, which to me look just like random jagged rocks sticking out of an otherwise very flat terrain.

I totally recommend visiting Maleny and think that Chris and I will probably be back, maybe even for a weekend stay next time. :)
