· Back in Singapore

Singapore, Singapore · 9th Jul 2008 · Posted by Sanjay
Tuesday morning we woke up at 5am to finish packing. We had to leave the house just after 8am, and made it to the airport around 9.30am.
There we checked in and had to say final goodbyes. 4 weeks had come to an end. This South African trip was at an end…and now we have to head back towards Australia…unless we never got on the plane….but unfortunately we did…

We had allowed some time at Joburg airport for last minute shopping. But as you can only check in 3 hours before your flight, we were slightly rushed once again. I always like shopping at Sneakers at the airport, but only bought one item, and a few little things.

The airport has been going through a major revamp…I guess especially with 2010 round the corner (soccer world cup for the unsporty, although reading a blog like this you really should know your sport by now!). If anyone wants to come to 2010, for the best time you can ever have, me and Rheanna will guide you around personally (for a minimal fee…just shout us our airfare and some accommodation…it’s a steal really)

The flight to Singapore was okay, as far as long haul goes. Rheanna got some sleep (she has been quite sick and grumpy the last few days.Rheanna: Thanks for the sympathy you have been showing in the last WEEK I’ve been sick sanj – not), so I was quite glad for some peace and quiet! I watched a few movies, Run fatboy run (a quite good running movie and way better than chariots of fire!), 21 and never back down

We got into Singapore at 5.20am. Considering it was 11.20pm Joburg time I was starting to feel tired!
We went through customs and walked straight out as I didn’t want to declare my Springbok.
We checked in to the Hotel about 7am, but our room wasn’t ready until 9am.
It was raining outside but we ventured on the MRT (it’s not that great a system. Not sure what the big deal is. It’s 20 mins walk from our hotel. Hong Kong is much better), to Little India.
Did a bit of wandering around before coming back to the hotel. We had a quick snooze(only 4 hours) and then went shopping on Orchard road (organised by our tour operator at the hotel)
Firstly we got taken to a dodgy Indian electronics operator (well when is an Indian not dodgy). You know the places where you don’t need or want anything, but are so hard to walk away from. Well $140 later we left!

For those who have never been to Orchard rd, it is Singapore’s premier shopping strip. It runs for miles with shop after shop. Because we don’t need anything or want anything, we got bored after a couple of shops.

We then went to Clarke Quay, a refurbished area around the river. It’s a bit overrated in my opinion, but we had dinner at an Indian restaurant. $90 for a dinner that wasn’t that great! (normally we would spend $40-50 for us both). Gonna take a while to get used to not being in South Africa where your money goes twice as far…
