· Getting lost

Tuesday morning we slept in a bit. After having a bit of a lazy morning, me and Rheanna went to Cresta, a large shopping centre we haven’t been to before. We only ended up with 3 hours which was a shame as some shops we spend 30-40 mins in easily and have to rush out of again. So this venture needs to be continued…

That morning we had organised a trip to the Kruger park for the next 3 days so we had to rush to go pick up the rental car. We had a bit of a hassle there as they wanted to see my passport which I didn’t have on me. (A bit of arguing took place there!) But they gave us the car provided we got the passport to them first thing in the morning courtesy of Rheanna’s mum.
I was supposed to follow Rheanna home as I wasn’t quite sure of the way (her in the rental car, me in Rheanna’s dad’s car). It was fine (in peak hour traffic) until Rheanna goes through a yellow light, leaving me at the intersection! I tried to see where she went but no good (She had no cellphone for me to ring either), so I saw the westgate shopping centre and thought I’d find my own way home from there, as I know my way (from a particular side of the mall). I thought I recognised where I was and started my way home. No problem, should be home in 30 mins.

Then I got confused. A sign said Randfontein left, when I was going straight. What’s going on here?? I turned around (later it transpired Rheanna saw me, but did nothing to get my attention!!) as maybe I was going in the wrong direction?
Later I find out the sign is for a different way. Had I continued straight for another minute or 2 I’d definitely have recognised where I was and had no problem.
So I turned back and went left. Now nothing is familiar. It’s getting dark. Soon I am in the middle of nowhere passing lots of black shanty towns. Don’t want to be lost here, by myself, in the dark. Nothing is looking familiar at all. Where am I??

Soon I see a sign for Randfontein, on the R41. Ok, if I follow that I can get to Randfontein and find my way from there. I’m passing signs that say Lenasia this way, Krugersdorp that way. Lenasia is dodgy, an Indian area near Soweto. I’m not seeing any lights to indicate a town, or residential area at all. After this carries on for an eternity (probably 15 mins or so) I get towards Randfontein and the town centre. I think I recognise a bridge straight that I need to go over, but the main road is left. I stop at the service station. I ask for directions, no one has heard of Greenhills rd. They call someone but I’m busting so I go leave to find the toilet. Now no one wants to help me. I get a text from Rheanna asking me where I am (duh if I knew I would be home), and my phone is now ringing as well. It’s all happening…

I ring Rheanna (it’s an international call for me to make), and head out on the main road. I’m actually leaving the city, but I see the Toyota dealer I recognise, so I turn around and know my way from there. Phew!

  • Well, usually Sanjay has a really good sense of direction. I'm always impressed when we go back to SA at how much he remembers where to go. But I guess its harder when you are on your own, without backup!
