· Hungry Hippos

Saint Lucia Estuary, South Africa · 10th Jun 2008 · Posted by Sanjay
Monday morning we awoke having had a fairly decent sleep. I started with a 3km run but my leg is still sore…
We then went to a crocodile farm. The only problem was that it was pretty cold and I had underprepared myself so I was freezing my ass off. Did you know that because Crocs are cold blooded, their energy levels are influenced by the weather, so when it is cold they are a lot more sluggish.
We also got to see quite a few baby and young crocodiles which was pretty cool.

After that we drove 80km south to Richards bay. We looked around a bit and went to a shopping centre to go to the supermarket. Inside I was reminded of how much cool stuff there is in South Africa! We are going to have to allow more time to shop! We saw a SA rugby duvet cover set, but unfortunately it was only for a single bed. Rheanna won't allow me to buy a single bed to go with the set either…

After driving back to St Lucia we went for a cruise on the lake. It is only an average depth of 1.5m but is very large. Unfortunately there were tourists on board with us! They are so annoying!
We saw numerous amounts of hippo! And in large groups of around 10-15 too. It was awesome to be right up close to them and see them in the water. We weren’t more than a metre or 2 away. As the lake is so shallow they are literally standing on the bottom of the lake.
We only managed to see a few crocs, and got about 1m from a fairly large one.
