Friday morning we woke up early and were waiting in the car at the gates of Olifants rest camp by 5.50am. The gates opened at 6am and we were off. We back tracked a little to go to a lookout spot. Nothing there. We drover a few km back to Satara (Lions were here yesterday), but see nothing. Now it is after 6.30am. We are already behind schedule. So we try to 50kph it through to Letaba rest camp. We get there after 7am and mistakenly go into the shop. We should know better! Now it is about 7.40am. We need something to eat and it takes forever. After 8am by the time we leave Letaba. We wanted to be out of Kruger by 8-8.30am

On the way out we pass our second speed camera in Kruger. Both times I was just over 50…I hope! Weird to see speed cameras there

We get out of Kruger at the Phalaborwa gate close to 10am. We go to the city centre to find the police station. We report our accident for insurance purposes, and surprisingly it was reasonably quick. Now we didn’t want to head back towards Phalaborwa gate the way we came because we need to go in the opposite direction. We are late!!!

Stupidly we don’t ask anyone for directions. Five miunutes of driving later we are lost (we don’t have a map). We stop to ask a black guy for directions…no English…he motions to a maid next door. She comes running out and doesn’t understand much more. Then she hands us a cellphone and runs back to the house. What’s going on? Now she’s speaking Afrikaans and wanting us to fix her cellphone. After dealing with this matter, we ask directions. She tells us the way out. She thinks.

We carry on, we get lost further.
Close to 11am we make it out of Phalaborwa, on the way to Polokwane.
We get to Polokwane after 1pm. We stop at an Ultra city (service station with food etc), and order Steer burgers. Now Rheanna says we must eat it in the car. I’m not convinced and with my King Steer, it goes everywhere. Sauce all over my hands, on my trousers. After 2 bites I get out the car. Frustrated and arguing with Rheanna I chuck it away and step into the drivers seat and start driving. There I hope she’s happy! I’m hungry but at least we are back on the road again!

We hoof it at 130-140kph to Pretoria. We make it to Pretoria by 3.30. It’s about an hour to our destination, and Friday peak traffic is starting. We have to get there by 5pm, and still fill up! We made it with about 15 mins to spare, blood pressures through the roof and a whole lot of stress! Now we just have to deal with a damaged car…fun!

The original plan was to be back in Joburg by 3pm latest so we could go to the rugby at Ellis Park (Joburg), my favourite stadium. So we had to forgo that and instead had an earlier night.
