As we sat on the deck eating breakfast next morning Mount Madeleine appeared out of the clouds. The weather was stunning again for our last day’s tramp and we had wonderful views of the spectacular mountains we had missed on the way in. The river and the creeks had already returned to their normal flows. We stopped off to see Hidden Falls which pours through a narrow cleft in the granite rocks.
Alan was at the road end to meet us and we cooked hot noodles in the bus for lunch, a nice change from dry old crackers, then walked in the short distance to see the Humboldt Falls. They were very impressive, dropping in three long falls on the far side of the valley.
Gunn’s Camp seemed like home when we returned to very welcome hot showers, clean, dry clothes and a delicious dinner of BBQ pork chops and roast vegetables. We all really enjoyed the Hollyford. Many people walk it in a shorter time but, by taking our time, we felt we had experienced it in all its moods. Although it doesn’t have the dramatic features of some of the more famous tracks in Fiordland, we had enjoyed a great variety of scenery – river, bush, lake, mountains, beach, sand spit, boulder beach and waterfalls.
